Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor...

Picture of Tony Coll being filmed I am a communication coach and a producer, writer and director of both drama and documentary video. I am also a voice-over artiste, including some very wacky voices, and a comedy songwriter.

As a former BBC TV and BBC radio journalist and newsreader, I am well able to deliver the standard authoritative 'serious news voice'; but as a seasoned comedy writer and performer I can also provide a variety of regional, national and character voices for cartoon characters.

... pirate!

On the Singapore TV ‘Okto’ channel in 2009, I was asked to provide a frenetic sports-style commentary – in the voice of a pirate – for the children’s TV art competition ‘DOODLECHAMPS’.

For the BBC’s ‘SMALL TALK DIARIES’ on the CBBC channel in the UK, I scripted a pilot episode and provided voices for slugs, snails and insects. I’m in talks with another company about doing the voice of a seagull in another children’s series.

My bizarre mix of skills has been honed over many years by my unusual combination of creative and journalistic experience.

I was educated by Jesuit priests at the North London grammar school where Alfred Hitchcock went, and studied law at Oxford. I was a journalist for the first half of my career, starting as a weekly and daily newspaper reporter and progressing via the BBC World Service and BBC local radio to reporting for BBC TV in London and Manchester.

In Manchester I discovered a talent for drama and comedy, and started writing and performing topical songs on radio and TV, singing to my own guitar accompaniment. My wife Pam Beddard and I then formed a comedy group which also included a young Steve Coogan and Coronation Street scriptwriter Julie Jones, and took a show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Moving to Bristol, I performed topical songs on a radio show presented by Chris Morris (of BRASS EYE fame) and was for two years HTV's instant songwriter, writing and performing a song to order for the TV chat show LATE & LIVE. I have also written humorous material for TV comics and presenters.

Back at the ‘day job’, I gained extensive experience as a corporate video scriptwriter, director and producer, including a spell as creative director of a national production company. I have won three corporate video awards.

My first broadcast drama was CORN DEVILS, a comedy for HTV West about crop circles, starring Philip Jackson and Sorcha Cusack. It drew a 30% audience share, impressive for a local production.

I also have two feature film projects in the pipeline - a sequel to the 1960s hit The Virgin Soldiers, and a medieval blockbuster based on the legend of William Tell.

In the museum sector, I spent a month in Singapore, researching and writing a short play about the country’s history, to be the final event in the audience’s tour of a new museum, the Singapore Discovery Centre. It involved four live actors and a video wall as well as conventional stage scenery, lighting and sound.

When I’m not coaching, training, writing or directing, I’m enjoying Bristol’s impressive music and drama scene and spending time with my family. I’m very happy to consider new projects, the wackier the better! Just drop me a line at or ring (+44) (0) 117 987 0442.
